Traffic signs are divided into 3 main categories:

  1. Mandatory/regulatory signs
  2. Informatory signs
  3. Cautionary signs



Mandatory/regulatory signs/ Prohibited signs

Red circle instructs what should not be done.
Or
Signs mark with that particular red line is called prohibited sign.

One way sign:

 One- way sign specifies that the traffic moves in a single direction and you may not go this way.

One way road (no right entry) sign:

This indicates that traffic that moves in a single direction. one way road is a road either facilitating only one way traffic, or designed to direct vehicles to move in one direction. This sign means that you can go from that road but cannot come back from that road.

One way road (no left entry) sign:

This indicates that traffic that moves in a single direction. A one way Street is a street either facilitating only one way traffic, or designed to direct vehicles to move in a one direction. this sign means that you can come from that road but cannot go from that road.

No entry sign:

 This sign is located at place where the vehicles are not allowed to enter. This sign indicates that entry into the area where the sign is displayed is not allowed. So whenever you see this sign on road do not enter with your vehicles

No way both direction sign:

 This sign is used at the end of the roads where entry to all types of vehicular traffic is prohibited.

Horn prohibited sign:

 Sounding of horn is not allowed, near hospitals and in silence zones.

No right turn sign:

 Vehicles are not allowed to make a turn to the right.

No left turn sign:

 Vehicles are not allowed to make a turn to the left.

No u-turn sign:

 This sign is used at places where vehicles are forbidden to make a turn to the reverse direction of travel.

Overtaking prohibited sign:

Sight distance is restricted and overtaking will be dangerous.

Pedestrian prohibited sign:

 Pedestrians are not allowed there.

Bicycle prohibited sign:

  Cycles are not allowed.

Trucks prohibited sign:

 Movement of trucks is not allowed.

All motor vehicles prohibited sign:

 This sign is used at place where entry to all types of motor vehicles is prohibited.

No stopping sign:

 Vehicles cannot stop even temporarily.

 Restriction ends sign:

 This sign indicates the point at which all prohibitions notified by prohibitory signs for moving of vehicles cease to apply.

Parking sign:

This symbol indicates that you can park your vehicle on that area or road. So whenever you see this sign you can park your vehicles over there.

Two way road sign:

 A two way road is a road that allows vehicles to travel in both directions. On most two way roads especially main roads, a line is painted down the middle of the road to remind drivers to stay on their side of the road.

No pedestrian sign:

 Heavy traffic areas are no place for pedestrian and prevent accident by clearly stating areas in which pedestrian are not allowed. Whether it is a dangerous road or factory, these signs alert pedestrians to where they should not go.

Men at work sign:

 Men at work! Alert oncoming cars, pedestrians, and protect workers and drivers near worksite, construction messages remind everyone to drive carefully.

No left turn sign:

 This traffic sign indicates that left turns are prohibited. When you see the “no left turn” sign at and crossing, you can either travels straight through or turn right.

No u turn sign:

 This traffic sign indicates that u turn is prohibited. When you see “no u turn sign” at crossing that you are not allowed to take u turn. In some areas u turn is not allowed due to high traffic.

No right turn sign:

 This traffic sign indicates that right turns are prohibited. When you see the “no right turn sign” at a crossing, you can either travel straight through or turn left.

No truck sign:

 This indicates that trucks are not allowed on this road, not all roads are meant for truck traffic. Low clearance, weight limits and other road condition strict truck traffic.

No parking sign:

 This sign means that parking is not allowed but vehicles can stop for short duration to allow passengers to get into or get out of the vehicle.

Left turn ahead sign:

 Left turn sign indicates that you have to take left turn ahead.

Right turn ahead sign:

This sign indicates that you have to take right turn ahead. In practice this usually means that there are situations when it is possible to turn right but not go straight.

Left curve ahead sign:

This sign means that a slippery condition might exist use extreme caution and slow down when the road is wet and when you see this symbol ahead, also it indicates that you have take a slight left turn ahead.

Right curve ahead sign:

 This sign means that a slippery condition might exist. Use extreme caution and slow down when the road is wet and when you see this symbol ahead

Pedestrian crossing sign:

A pedestrian crossing or crosswalk is a place designed for pedestrians to cross a road.

School crossing sign:

It is considered a school advanced warning sign and pedestrian crossing where school children’s cross a street on their way to school.

Stop sign:

This sign used on road ways where traffic is required to stop before entering a major road.

Yield sign (Give way sign):

This sign is used to assign right-of- way to traffic on certain road ways.

Compulsory signs/ informatory sign

An informative sign is a very legibly printed and very noticeable placard that informs people of the purpose of an object, or gives them instruction on the use of something.
 Sign with the blue boards are compulsory signs or informatory sign

Compulsory turn left sign:

 This sign indicate that vehicles are permitted to proceed left only.

 Compulsory turn right sign:

 This sign indicate that vehicles are permitted to proceed right only.

 Compulsory ahead sign:

 This sign indicates that the vehicle is only permitted to proceed ahead.

 Compulsory keep left sign:

 This sign indicates that the vehicles are obliged to keep left only.

Compulsory ahead or turn right sign:

 This sign means the vehicles can either go straight or turn right.

 Compulsory ahead or turn left sign:

 This sign means the vehicles can either go straight or turn left.

 Sound horn compulsory sign:

 This sign indicates that must blow the horn.

 Buses only sign:

 This sign means that only buses are allowed and other traffic is not allowed on this road.

Pedestrians only sign:

 This sign means only pedestrians are allowed and the traffic is not allowed on this road.

Cautionary sign

Cautionary signs:

 Sign with the triangles are cautionary signs

Right or left hand curve sign:

 This sign is used where the direction of alignment changes. The sign forewarns the device to reduce the speed and proceed cautiously along the road.

Narrow road signs:

 This sign is normally found in rural areas where a sudden reduction in width of pavement causes the danger to traffic.

Hump ahead road sign:

 Sometimes there is a hump on road either intentionally created for slowing the traffic or caused by any other reason when you see this board you should reduce the speed to cross the hump.

Road widens sign:

 This sign is normally found in rural areas where a sudden widening of road causes a danger to traffic.

Narrow bridge sign:

 This sign is erected on road in advance of bridges where the clear width between the curves or wheel guards is less than normal width of carriageway.

Right or left reverse bend sign:

 This sign is used where the nature of the reverse bend is not obvious to approaching traffic and constitutes a hazard.

Cross road sign:

 This sign is displayed in advance of the crossroad where a sufficient large volume of crossing or entering traffic with restricted sight distance is likely to constitute a hazard.

Right or left hair pin bend sign:

 This sign is used where the change in direction is so considerable that it amounts to reversal of direction.

Roundabout sign:

 This sign is used where it is necessary to indicate the approach to a roundabout.

Speed limit sign:

 This sign is erected at the beginning of the area covered by a speed restriction with numerals indicating the speed limit in kilometer per hour.
